FORTRUST’s optimal power design provides some of the most reliable and highest availability power in the industry. FORTRUST has delivered continuous critical systems uptime to its Denver data center customers since opening its doors in 2001. Our commitment to energy efficiency has helped us reduce data center power usage effectiveness (PUE) and create a sustainability-focused culture that is green and efficient.
FORTRUST Denver is the largest data center in the region with more than 300,000 square feet and 34 megawatts of data center capacity. Densities range from a base level of greater than 100 watts/ft2 in our raised floor areas to over 800 watts in our data modules.
We provide two or more “A” & “B” side electrical circuit capabilities to each individual cabinet or rack for dual corded equipment in a 2N configuration and our data modules come with a 2N distribution to each cabinet or rack.

FORTRUST Power Components
Our mechanical and electrical distribution systems are some of the most advanced in the industry. Our MEP features:
- Concurrently maintainable electrical infrastructure
- N+1 UPS and GENS (1 of every 3 UPSs is a +1 unit)
- No common buss for UPS or GENS
- 2N distribution (A and B side) to racks
- STS/PDU provide primary and alternate source UPS for each side
- Dedicated 2.0 and 2.5MW Caterpillar GENS for each unit substation
- Onsite 3,000 amp load bank built into the critical electrical distribution system, which allows for regular full rated load testing of generators
- No cooling towers or subsequent onsite back-up water supply necessary
- Make-up air into the MEP and colocation areas enter via a chemical filter bank to remove corrosives in the air stream that can attack copper and electronics
FORTRUST employs 750 or 1,000 kVA uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs) in an N+1 configuration. We utilize an online, or double conversion UPS device to ensure service does not go down due to power related problems. An online UPS design leverages continually charged batteries for alternative power and constantly converts AC to battery DC, then battery DC to AC to support the IT load. The UPS senses the loss of primary power, switches to the alternative power source automatically, and continues to power the system without disruption. There is no switching delay to interrupt vital servers. Load servers are completely isolated from the line AC, so “dirty” power from a backup data center generator is filtered before powering the load.
As part of our commitment to innovation, FORTRUST will be installing Diesel Rotary Uninterruptible Power Supplies (DRUPS) in late 2017. DRUPS are more efficient, reliable, have a longer-life cycle and take up less space than traditional static UPS and Batteries, providing more expansion capabilities within the data center. The addition of the DRUPS will allow us to serve the growing high density needs of our customers in a more efficient manner.
In the event of a power interruption, FORTRUST’s generators provide the data center with continuous power. FORTRUST currently maintains several generators in an N+1 configuration inside weather resistant and environmentally controlled enclosures onsite. The capacity of the generators at the FORTRUST Denver Data Center are rated at 2000 kW and 2500 kW, depending on the individual generator, and they are rated as continuous run.
Although the facility uses multiple utility feeds from diverse substations to power our facility as an economic alternative, our generators are considered the primary source of reliable power. If utility power is lost, generators at the FORTRUST Denver Data Center will be online and supplying power within approximately 10-11 seconds. During that 10 second start up time, our battery power can maintain our facility. The run time for each of FORTRUST’s generators at full load is approximately 24 to 48 hours per generator.
FORTRUST maintains agreements with multiple fuel providers for the continuous supply of diesel fuel to the generators, as needed. In the event of a disaster, FORTRUST has arrangements in effect with three local fuel suppliers that will deliver fuel within a 24-hour period.
